DOOM GONG
DOOM GONG are seven multi-instrumentalists from Louisville, Kentucky, who gave up trying to describe their own sound and simply invented a new genre for it: Denim Psych, built, in their own words, on nothing more complicated than blood, sweat, and a lot of denim. Formed in 2022, the band works as a genuine collective, trading instruments and songwriting duties rather than sticking to fixed roles. Three albums in three years, DOOM GONG (Romanus Records, 2023), Dream Behemoth (Romanus Records, 2023), and MEGAGONG (Romanus Records, 2025), trace a climb from exploratory psych jams toward something heavier and more fully formed, with MEGAGONG arriving as the band's most complete record yet.
The band's two drummers are not a gimmick so much as a philosophy: everything about DOOM GONG runs on more hands and more ideas than one genre can hold. Horns, keys and layered guitars drift in and out of focus as songs unfold, built less around individual spotlight moments than a constant push and pull between the gentle and the overwhelming. Grooves gather patiently before tipping into something heavier, and that shift, from laid-back sway to volcanic noise, is treated as the whole point rather than a twist.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A DOOM GONG set runs on momentum rather than a script. Seven musicians trade instruments mid-song, drums doubling up just as a groove threatens to settle, until a crowd that started out nodding along finds itself caught somewhere between dancing and headbanging without quite noticing the shift. Nothing stays still for long, and nobody in the room seems to mind. And don't forget your at least double denim outfit.
